California Notary Stamp Requirements

†† Must Meet The Following Requirements:

ï Be photographically reproducible when affixed to a document;

ï Contain the California State seal and the words ìNotary Publicî;

ï Contain the name of the California notary public as shown on the commission;

ï Contain the name of the county where the oath of office and notary public bond are on file;

ï Contain the expiration date of the California notary publicís commission;

ï Contain the sequential identification number (commission number) assigned to the notary

††† public, as well as the identification number assigned to the Stamp manufacturer or vendor; and

ï Be circular not over two inches in diameter, or be a rectangular form of not more than

† one inch in width by two and one-half inches in length, with a serrated or milled edged border.

Each California Notary Public is required to have and to use a California Notary Public Stamp. The Stamp must be kept in a locked and secured area, under the direct and exclusive control of the notary public and must not be surrendered to an employer upon termination of employment, whether or not the employer paid for the Stamp, or to any other person. Because of the legal requirement that the Stamp be photographically reproducible, the rubber stamp is almost universal; however, notaries public may use an embosser Stamp in addition to the rubber stamp. The legal requirements for a Stamp are shown below.
